Welcome

Humboldt County is a unique location to live and work. We are unlike any coastal town in California because we have fewer people living in 3568 square miles within our county. Most of the population is in the county seat of Eureka and in the small surrounding towns of Arcata, McKinleyville and Fortuna. Our main source of entertainment is from the natural resources. We have six rivers influencing our recreation, the Klamath, the Trinity, the Van Duzen, the Eel, the Smith and the Mad. Rafting, steelhead and trout fishing, kayaking and swimming are favorites. Since we are located on Northcoast California, we enjoy the Pacific Ocean. Surfing, salmon and halibut fishing, whale watching and snorkeling. Hiking/treking, climbing and biking on the coastal and mountain trails are also favorites.
We are creative in the arts, too. Every month Eureka and Arcata have an Arts Alive featuring our many artists while enjoying the local musicians and foods. Many birders come to view the coastal and mountain birds. We have the Arcata Marsh, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and the Humboldt Lagoons to see a variety of birds. Many small entrepreneurial businesses have been created here such as Restoration Hardware, Kokotat and Lost Coast Brewery. Humboldt State University is located in Arcata attracting natural resources & sciences majors.
Our largest employers are the university and small businesses.
Homes have been built here since the late 1800’s to recent. We have Victorians, Farmhouses, Craftsmans, Mid-Century and Contemporary homes located throughout the county. One of the most famous Victorians in the US is the Carson Mansion which is located on Humboldt Bay in Eureka.
Affordable housing is an attraction. In today’s market, (6/2013), the average home value in Eureka is $240,000, the Arcata the average is $289,000 and McKinleyville this average is $268,000. With interest rates low and the decline in home values over the past seven years, buyers are seizing an opportunity of property ownership. (Statistics provided by the Humboldt Board of Realtors, May 2013.)
